Cheap living in Kaiserslautern
SWR Aktuell reports about the study by the Moses-Mendelssohn-Instituts on student living costs in the summer semester 2025, which showed that students and trainees in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate often pay a lot for their shared room - but not in Kaiserslautern!
At the start of the summer semester 2025, the average housing costs for students at medium-sized university locations (over 5,000 students) amount to EUR 493. This corresponds to a moderate increase of 0.9% (around EUR 4) compared to the previous semester and 2.8% (around EUR 14) compared to the previous year. In only 23 of 88 cities is a normal room available within the current BAföG flat-rate housing allowance and in 39 cities, where almost half of all students in Germany are enrolled, it is almost impossible to find a room within the flat-rate housing allowance. This makes it difficult for students to find accommodation and can play an important role in choosing where to study.
Students in Kaiserslautern can breathe a sigh of relief, as a room in a shared flat here costs an average of just 380 euros. This is well below the national average and makes living in Kaiserslautern much more attractive than in more expensive cities such as Mainz with an average of 530 euros or Freiburg with around 600 euros.
